Lubbock ISD readies 5th Annual Safety Fair for specialized-program students, expects about 900 attendees

Kathleen Meadors and Kami Finger told the committee the district will host its 5th Annual Safety Fair at the Civic Center Exhibition Hall next week, designed specifically for students in specialized programs. The event grew from a past tragedy and aims to give students a calm, supportive opportunity to meet emergency personnel and community helpers.
Meadors said about 900 students are expected to attend in age- and-program-split groups and staff and related-service providers will be present for behavioral support. “Parents are not invited to attend in order to avoid overcrowding and to maintain a calm, structured experience for students,” the presentation noted.
Organizers reported more than 40 community partners will participate this year—including firefighters, police, DPS, animal services, and Lubbock Power & Light—up from roughly 20 partners in the first year. Breakfast and lunch are donated, and participation is voluntary with no fee to community partners.
The program schedule begins with setup by 7:00 a.m., with first student rotations starting around 9:00 a.m.; a second group will attend after lunch. Special accommodations for restroom and sensory needs will be provided, and staff said the event consistently receives positive feedback and many partners request to return.
