The council awarded the 19th Street asphalt overlay project (19th Street from Nye Avenue to Summers Avenue) to Hawkins Construction as the lowest responsive bidder at $273,405.80. Dan Gillis, director of public works, said the project will include removal and replacement of asphalt, concrete repairs, drainage improvements, curb ramps, manhole adjustments and erosion control, and reported seven bids with a low of approximately $273,405.80.
Council members asked whether an adjacent section east of Nye Avenue (which is concrete) could be included; Gillis said core sampling and a full design would be required before deciding whether overlay or full reconstruction is appropriate and estimated core sampling and design work might occur this summer with construction in a following season. The council approved the contract (vote 6‑1).
