Board clears Menards to build taller Saginaw bagging facility

The Saginaw Zoning Board of Appeals approved case J262876 to allow Menards to exceed the 50-foot height limit and construct a 70–71 foot section to house batching and bagging equipment at 1808 Veterans Memorial Parkway.
Nick Brenner, a real estate representative for Menards, told the board the extra height is required by manufacturing equipment and silos that must be installed before the building is enclosed. "This equipment is all engineered by our vendors...we are to the point where we do need this variance to move forward with this plan," Brenner said, explaining the process and noting the company hopes to keep the building at 28 feet where equipment is not needed. He also stated the project is "over $20,000,000 investment." Todd Miller, president and CEO of Saginaw Future, urged approval and described Menards as "an outstanding corporate partner," noting the project fits the city's industrial future-use designation.
Staff and board members discussed why the 50-foot limit exists and confirmed the taller portion is limited to the equipment area; members cited nearby taller industrial structures as precedent. Nash and Dawkins voted in favor, citing functional necessity; Johnson and the chair also voted to approve the variance. The board recorded no neighborhood opposition during the hearing and conditioned approval on the variance being limited to the equipment zone as presented by the applicant.
