Commissioners approve allocation of remaining $1.47M from American Bridal origination fee

The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Aug. 6 to adopt a resolution allocating $1,472,500 left from a $5,000,000 American Bridal origination fee to a set of projects across Wyandotte County.
Commissioner Sharon Bynum, chair of the subcommittee that recommended the distribution, walked commissioners through the list and the dollar amounts. “There was 1,472,000 remaining,” Bynum said, then enumerated recommended uses including an $526,800 payoff of an outstanding LISC loan on a downtown grocery, $250,000 for design of a new golf clubhouse at Sunflower Hills and smaller amounts for sidewalks and temporary speed bumps.
The spending package also included $82,500 for abatement equipment for illegal-dumping response, $25,000 for a downtown mini-master plan, $25,000 for sister-city program support, a $40,000 sidewalk near TA Edison Elementary School and $12,000 for outreach by the clerk’s office for tax-credit and rebate programs. Mayor Crystal Watson asked for the motion, which Bynum made and Commissioner Hill seconded; the roll call recorded a 10–0 vote in favor.
The resolution appears as agenda item 6.1 and the board recorded the action as a formal allocation of remaining American Bridal funds. Commissioners said the package targeted both neighborhood-level repairs and strategic downtown needs, and staff will implement the line-item allocations.
