Lanark’s Code Enforcement Officer Doug Rominski told the council on July 21 that an inspection at 302 N. Broad Street revealed serious health and safety violations, including extensive toxic mold, structural deterioration, peeling paint and suspected asbestos insulation.
Rominski said the property owner was directed to either fully remediate the building and provide professional certifications confirming the structure is sound and free of mold or to demolish the building, with a deadline to begin corrective action on or before Aug. 30. The officer reported the owner has been cooperative. Rominski also noted a separate property owned by the same person at 647 N. Broad Street has a collapsing basement wall that is under review.
Council members discussed enforcement steps and agreed the matter will be revisited if the owner does not meet the timeline set by the city.
