A council member brought forward a citizen proposal to make the Centennial Park drive one'way to reduce hazards around event parking and pedestrian activity. Leo said staff and the police department have "our head around a way that it could work" and that police would monitor the area for a year to see whether enforcement or an administrative change is warranted.
Council members said a one'way change would likely be implemented with paint and signage and that staff intended to revisit the idea this winter and, if agreed, implement it before the following Memorial Day tourism season. One member argued changes should be considered before planned adventure hub activity and other downtown uses increase traffic.
Separately, a council member raised a downtown church's complaint about losing parking when the city converted part of 7th Street into a loading zone. "That's really impacted that church's parking on Sunday mornings," the council member said. Staff noted the area is not a public street in the conventional traffic code sense and enforcement of specific church-only parking might be limited, but the committee agreed to add the issue to a future meeting for public input and possible administrative signage.
