Lurie Children’s outlines Downers Grove hospital program: 48 beds, emergency department and outpatient center

Dr. Marcelo Malacuti, chief medical officer for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, told the Planning & Zoning Commission the proposed Downers Grove campus is designed as a pediatric community hospital delivering care for lower and moderate acuity needs while coordinating complex cases with the downtown campus.
"The approximately 300,000 square foot hospital located on a 13 acre campus has been designed around the needs of children and families," Malacuti said, listing the facility program: "48 inpatient beds, a 35‑room pediatric emergency department, 6 operating rooms, and a multi‑specialty outpatient center with 50 exam rooms and 10 ambulatory infusion rooms." He added the ED and inpatient areas will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while many outpatient services will operate during daytime and evening hours.
Hospital CEO Tom Shanley described the project as a strategic regional investment and identified a planned $480,000,000 investment to expand access and capacity. Shanley said many families from the western suburbs already make long trips downtown for care and that the new campus would reduce travel burdens for those families while remaining integrated with Lurie’s downtown specialty services.
