The Mission CISD Board of Trustees adopted an ordinance on Sept. 11 setting the 2024–25 school tax rate at $1.113 per $100 of assessed value.
Joel Garcia, deputy superintendent for business and support services, reviewed the components of the proposed rate, including Maintenance & Operations (M&O) and Interest & Sinking (I&S) components and the use of July 19, 2024 certified property values from the Hidalgo County Appraisal District. Garcia said the district proposed $1.113 per $100 valuation and explained that, because taxable values rose, the No-New-Revenue Rate calculation differed from the proposed rate.
Trustee Dolores Reyna moved to adopt the tax rate, saying, "I move that the property tax rate be increased by the adoption of a tax rate of $1.1130, which is effectively a 17.16 percent increase in the tax rate." Trustee Natividad Sosa seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Garcia noted the prior-year levy was $28,258,921 and told trustees the district’s taxable value rose by $2,974,603,712 based on the certified values used in the calculations. The administration said the recommended rate matches the prior year's nominal rate but exceeds the No-New-Revenue Rate, reflecting inflationary pressures and budget needs.
The ordinance takes effect as adopted; administration will continue budget monitoring and public reporting as required by law.
