Board approves Reading Academies training for K–3 teachers, authorizes up to $75,000

Dr. Sharon Robert, deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction, told the board that "House Bill (HB) 3 passed by the 86th Texas Legislature in 2019 ... requires local education agencies to ensure all Kinder through 3rd grade teachers and principals in Texas complete the Reading Academies." She described the comprehensive facilitation model as a face-to-face program that combines online modules, in-person learning sessions and coaching, and said the district partners with Region One to provide the training at $3,000 per participant.
District administrators said 19 teachers currently need the training and recommended the board authorize $75,000 for the 2024–25 school year to cover the current cohort and allow for additional teachers due to reassignments or added classrooms. Trustee Natividad Sosa made the motion to approve; Trustee Dolores Reyna seconded. The motion passed with five votes in favor and one abstention by Trustee Veronica "Betty" R. Mendoza.
The board’s action directs the administration to enroll identified staff in the Reading Academies and to report back with updates on participation and any additional costs.
