Commission renews Westchester County DOC's one-year waiver for keep-on-person medication

The Commission of Correction approved a one-year renewal of Westchester County Department of Corrections' waiver (20W001) that allows certain incarcerated people to self-administer limited non-controlled, non-psychotropic medications.
A presenter described the program and its review: "This is a waiver to our regulation, of health services 77.3 a, possession of medication by incarcerated individuals," and said the county's program permits a limited 14-day supply prescribed by a physician. The presenter reported no grievances or complaints since implementation and that a recent health-services evaluation at the end of June "did not return any issues regarding medication administration."
Commissioners asked if there were concerns; none were raised, and the commission moved, seconded and approved the one-year renewal by voice vote. The renewal restores the county's ability to continue its keep-on-person medication protocol while the commission retains oversight.
Staff said the waiver was originally approved in April 2020 as a response to limiting contact between staff and the incarcerated population; the renewed waiver will remain under commission review.
