South Burlington advances Hinesburg Road shared-use path; NEPA review and right-of-way work next

City staff and consultant BHB presented a conceptual design update for the Hinesburg Road (Route 116) shared-use path from Williston Road south to Kennedy Drive and said the project will follow the VTrans Municipal Assistance Section (MAS) process and NEPA review.
Drew Jengris, the project's BHB manager, said the preferred alternative carried forward from earlier feasibility work is a 10-foot shared path on the west side of the corridor and that the project is funded through a state bicycle-and-pedestrian grant. He described multiple constraints — narrow state right-of-way, above-ground utilities, steep embankments north of the Citgo station and a requirement to treat new impervious area under state stormwater rules — and warned the team expects to seek right-of-way agreements with adjacent property owners.
The team also reported registered archaeological sites in parts of the corridor and said investigative excavation is planned in spring; the group has submitted environmental documentation for a categorical exclusion and anticipates a six- to nine-month review period before advancing to preliminary design and right-of-way negotiations.
