VDOT: bridge open, July detours planned on 723 and Little Creek Road closure set for July 7

VDOT staff said a culvert replacement on Little Creek Road is expected to close the road, weather permitting, beginning July 7 for localized work and that repairs on Jonesboro Road will follow completion of Crystal Lake Road work.
On Route 723 the contractor plans a closure for roughly 30 days (anticipated week after next) to complete a phase that requires a signed detour; detour signage will direct northbound traffic to an inside turn lane and a U‑turn crossover east of the intersection. The VDOT speaker described the RCUT (restricted crossing U‑turn) design and said its aim is to remove the dangerous left‑turn crossing movement at the four‑way intersection and reduce severe collisions.
Board members asked about speed limits and enforcement; VDOT noted legal speed reductions in work zones require studies and formal resolutions and recommended involving state police for enforcement. The department also outlined routine maintenance items — mowing cycles, pavement marking refreshes, and upcoming advertisement of snow‑removal contracts — and said it will coordinate with county staff about shoulder work and pavement treatments.
No board action was required; the report was informational and staff said they will notify citizens of upcoming closures and detours.
