Board adopts resolution recognizing California Native American Day; tribal representatives urge curriculum changes

The Monterey County Board of Education presented and adopted resolution No. 252601 recognizing California Native American Day on Sept. 26, 2025. The board read the resolution and invited tribal leaders from the Ohlone/Costanoan Esselen community to speak about local history, cultural preservation and curriculum recommendations.
Louise Miranda Ramirez, introduced by the board as tribal chairwoman for the Ohlone/Costanoan Esselen nation, urged educators to teach the "correct history of the Esalen[t] of Monterey County" and to include indigenous perspectives in local curricula. "Our people sang here. We sing here. We will always sing here," she told the board, calling for schools to teach the pain of ancestors alongside achievements.
Board staff offered MCOE communications support and the county recording studio to develop a video and curricular materials for the county’s 24 school districts and eight charter schools; trustees and tribal speakers expressed interest in partnership to produce instructional media for classrooms.
