Health officer: agent program grew to 450+ facilities; department seeks another sanitarian

Amy Clyburn, Vernon County health officer, described the county’s role as an agent of the state under DATCP and walked the committee through rapid program growth, staffing history and financials. She said the program started with about 162 facilities in 2018, rose through the pandemic and now exceeds 450 facilities. “We went up to 3 66 facilities…In 2026, over 4 50 facilities and that is climbing,” Clyburn said.
Clyburn said the program is funded by inspection fees and reported $179,578 in fee revenue for 2025 and $109,860 in fees so far in 2026. She presented high‑end budget projections for adding staff and operating costs and said the county will need another sanitarian to maintain inspection coverage. “We know that we are going to need another sanitarian and we know that that's going to cost us money,” she told the committee. The committee agreed to forward the proposed FTE to the finance committee and county board for action.
