Pilot urges Pierson to pursue FDOT/FAA grants, promote airport as workforce training site

A local pilot who identified himself as Eugene told the Pierson Town Council he wants to help the community make the municipal airport an asset rather than a burden, offering volunteer labor and grant-writing assistance.

Eugene described work by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and similar county programs that train high school students in welding and aircraft maintenance. "We also offered two kids a year to get their pilot's license," he said, adding that aircraft mechanics are in high demand and can earn substantial hourly rates. He urged the town to pursue grants from the state, FDOT and FAA, saying that small rural communities can be eligible for large shares of outside funding and that he previously saw examples of "97% funding" for projects.

Council and staff said UF Health is establishing a medevac facility at the airport and will operate 24/7; Mayor Gray Leonard invited Eugene to coordinate with staff (Ryan or Yvonne) so any proposed improvements would not interfere with medevac operations. "Once UF Health really gets in place...we can set up a time where you and I can sit down and talk about some things," Mayor Leonard said.

Eugene asked the council to pursue basic infrastructure such as a Unicom radio, restrooms and fuel service to make the airport functional and to reduce unsafe behaviors. He offered to help mow and to seek EAA support for training programs. Council members did not commit to spending but encouraged Eugene to meet with staff and bring a more detailed proposal back to the council.
