Pierson Council adopts charter amendment for November ballot

The Pierson Town Council voted to adopt Ordinance 2026-02 on second and final reading, advancing a set of revisions to the town charter to the Nov. 3, 2026 general election ballot.
Town attorney Scott Simpson read the ordinance title and cited Florida Statutes sections 101.161 and 166.031 during the reading. Vice Mayor Robert F. Greenland moved to adopt the ordinance on second reading and Councilwoman Lenny Richardson seconded; the clerk conducted a roll-call vote and the motion carried. "Let the record show we read the ordinance title, and it was passed by roll call," Mayor Gray Leonard said after the vote.
A resident asked how to review the full redlined charter and ballot summary; Simpson and staff said the redlined pages and the ballot summary would be made available and that the town would post documents online if the council approved the ordinance. The attorney also noted that the state could amend ballot language if a court requires revisions under the statutory process.
The ordinance packet as presented includes a ballot title and summary for voters and provisions covering conflicts, severability and codification. The council took formal action at the meeting and did not amend the ordinance on the floor. The change now proceeds through the election process rather than back to the council for further revision.
