Rockport high school students praise AP, VHS and internship opportunities

A panel of Rockport high-school students told the School Committee that advanced-placement courses, virtual VHS options and local internships are expanding the opportunities available to students in a small district.
"I just wanna talk about I've had a great time as I've gone through high school working with my teachers, Miss Rose and the guidance department to really form a path unique to me and to my goals," said Wyatt Wilkinson, a junior, describing flexible scheduling that allowed him to take AP Chemistry this year. Students said VHS virtual courses made specialized AP or college-level classes available that the district does not offer in person and that those options helped them pursue majors, like computational mathematics and music.
Seniors described a range of internships and capstone experiences. Lassen Ando said the capstone program will let her "intern" with the principal to learn about budgeting and school leadership, and Jalen Young described music and recording opportunities that led him to plan a college music program. Students noted upcoming AP exam dates (AP Biology on May 5 and an AP Calculus exam scheduled the following day) and thanked teachers who supported multi-year sequences culminating in AP coursework.
Principal Amy Rose said administrators planned to report back on internship placements and capstone progress. The committee thanked the students for their presentations.
