Rockport elementary students demonstrate math and reading programs to school committee

Third- and fourth-grade students showed the school committee how they use I-Ready, MyPath and HMH reading materials in class, described hands-on science labs and social-emotional learning activities, and said the programs help personalize learning and build cooperation.
Third- and fourth-grade students told the Rockport School Committee on April 2 that classroom software and workbooks are making math and reading more engaging and tailored to each student.
Third-grader Moe Twombly explained the class’s routine with I-Ready: "Usually, Miss B does word problems on the screens in groups," he said, adding that the class also uses "fluency flight" to practice multiplication facts. Rose Bingle said the district’s math workbooks include many word problems that encourage careful rereading, and the students described MyPath as a system that lets each child work at a different level and earn coins to play learning games.
Fourth graders described the HMH reading program as offering a range of genres and game-like online activities that personalize instruction. One student said the HMH workbooks have limited space for written answers and that students substitute lined paper to complete written responses. At the elementary level, students also highlighted hands-on science labs — including a filtration lab that simulated flood cleanup — and the use of science journals to prepare for labs and tests.
Principal Waterman and elementary staff said the lessons and digital tools are intentionally linked to classroom discussion and family-facing events so parents can follow and reinforce learning at home. The committee applauded the presentations and thanked the students for speaking at the meeting.
