Board OKs Sam Rayburn JROTC continuation and band travel; public commenters raise start-time and student concerns

The Pasadena ISD Board approved continuation of the JROTC unit at Sam Rayburn High School and authorized the Sam Rayburn High School Band to travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana for the Gulf Coast Championships on Oct. 26, 2024 at a cost of $12,250 to be paid with district and booster funds. Motions for both items passed 6-0.
During the public comment portion, Yen Rabe spoke about board member emails and school start time, Edward Valdez spoke about the benefits of the JROTC program, and Ellen Hernandez raised concerns about students at Pasadena Memorial High School. The board adjourned at 7:55 p.m. and set its next regular meeting for Sept. 24, 2024.
