Suzanne Pingel, PISD social worker, told the board on March 24 that "Currently, there are 105 students classified as 'homeless'" and described a range of district supports. Pingel said about $15,000 in donated backpacks and school supplies were distributed at the start of the year; roughly 300 snack packs are provided weekly to students in need and are funded by donations and packed by volunteers; the high school clothing room has supplied about 30 caps and gowns to graduating seniors. She also noted partnerships with the Lions Club for vision assistance and with The Bridge, a Children's Advocacy Center, for child abuse investigations and support services.
Pingel reported results from a recent drug and alcohol survey showing higher-than-state-average use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco; she said the results will be discussed at the next SHAC meeting and posted online. The social-services report as recorded in the minutes emphasizes coordination of enrollment meetings with families, targeted distribution of donated resources, and campus-based discretion in delivering clothes and food support.
