The Newfields Select Board voted unanimously to allow the police department to order a 2027 cruiser and equip it using the department's detail-revenue account, Select Board Chair Javier Heiran said at the July 28 meeting.
Police Chief Young told the board the department typically orders cruisers well ahead of delivery because of a 14–16 week lead time. He said the department plans to replace a 2015 cruiser that has about 110,000 miles and roughly 10,000–12,000 idle hours. Chief Young also asked the board to authorize expending about $4,600 from the emergency-management fund to purchase the base radio specified on the state bid, saying that emergency-management historically covers that equipment.
The chief described the department's preference to buy from a Massachusetts dealer with high-volume experience rather than the state bid if that yields cost savings. After discussion, Chair Javier Heiran moved to proceed with the purchase process; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
The board did not specify a single-line total for the cruiser, equipment and extended warranty in the public discussion; Chief Young described buying a five-year extended warranty but the transcript did not record a consolidated final price. The board said the expenditures would come from the detail revenue account and would not affect the town tax rate.
