Hillsdale housing committee to seek state grant for zoning review, board signals support
Summary
The town’s housing committee asked the board for permission to apply for a state grant that could fund zoning and housing-supply work; presenters proposed asking for $75,000–$100,000 of a program that allows awards up to $250,000 and said the application deadline was extended to late November.

Ellen Levy and housing-committee representatives presented a time-sensitive grant opportunity aimed at helping towns review zoning and increase housing supply. The presenter said the grant pool allows communities to seek up to $250,000 but the committee planned to apply for between $75,000 and $100,000 to fund zoning review, public meetings and technical assistance.
"we would like to ask your permission to apply for between 75 and a 100,000, grant," Presenter (Speaker 10) told the board and asked that the board review the Request for Proposals (RFP)/application before the town submits a final application. Board members asked whether the grant requires a local match; speakers said they did not believe a match was required and that the housing committee could contribute a small amount from its available funds to strengthen the proposal.
Board members emphasized standard municipal practice: review the application and place a resolution on the Nov. 18 agenda if the board agrees to support the submission. The chair said the town board needed to see the application text and that any resolution would follow the board’s normal process.
Why it matters: the grant could fund a targeted zoning review or housing-element work that dovetails with the town’s comprehensive-plan update, potentially easing regulatory barriers to modest multifamily or accessory dwelling units. The town indicated preliminary support but reserved formal approval until members have reviewed the RFP/application and a resolution is drafted.
