The governance committee updated the council on a multi-step charter-review process that involved researching nine similar municipalities, running discovery sessions and soliciting public feedback through two Meet Me on Main events and an online survey. Steven Marlin summarized a 10-item considerations matrix and said the committee intends to gather additional community input at a Nov. 5 forum.
"We also participated in the Meet Me On Main events ... we had about 272 responses between the two opportunities for people to participate," Marlin said, describing survey inclusion in the project brief. The committee outlined options the public will be asked to consider: whether the city’s leader should remain a council-elected president or become a mayor elected by residents; whether to keep five councilors or expand to seven; whether to adjust term lengths and whether to consider term limits or stipend changes.
Why it matters: Changes to the city charter would alter the structure of local government and how residents elect and compensate officials; the committee emphasized framing options as considerations rather than firm recommendations and said it will bring compiled feedback to the council in December.
What happens next: The committee will hold the Nov. 5 community forum, continue hybrid outreach options including focus groups and virtual inputs, and return a consolidated recommendation to the council in December.
