DGS searches for new hospital site as Moccasin Bend archaeology complicates reuse

Leader Cochran asked Department of General Services officials whether the state intends to rebuild at Moccasin Bend or look for a new hospital site. Deputy Commissioner John Hall said the current building is about 65 years old with extensive deferred maintenance; the state reviewed more than 100 properties in Hamilton County and is seeking roughly 40 acres to build a new facility in a similar, more rural setting.
Hall added the site at Moccasin Bend has substantial archaeological value—"by our state archaeologist number 1 site in the state of Tennessee"—so the governor has asked the department to seek another location. If the state vacates the current site, Hall said other entities such as the National Park Service may determine the future of the remaining acreage, noting about 200 acres previously were transferred to the National Park Service.
Leader Cochran asked that the committee stay informed about future plans and retained oversight interest; DGS said it would keep the committee updated as plans develop.
