The Brightwaters board held a public hearing and adopted Local Law 2 (to repeal a code section limiting which streets may be set to 25 mph) and Local Law 3 (to set a blanket 25-mph limit within village limits where allowed). The mayor and counsel explained that state law now permits municipalities to set village speed limits and that the village must still respect state and county jurisdiction on certain roads.
An audience member asked whether county roads could be changed; trustees clarified the village lacks authority over state and county roads and will review a separate traffic study for Montauk Highway and potential crosswalk placement. Following public comment the board closed the hearing and approved both laws by voice vote.
