The La Plata Planning Commission voted to recommend that the Town Council consider Zoning Text Amendment 04/2026, a town-initiated ordinance that updates the municipal ADU regulations to comply with recent Maryland law. Senior Planner Keanor Johnson told the commission the draft removes a 5,000-square-foot minimum lot-size requirement, recognizes internal ADUs, caps ADU size at 75% of the primary dwelling's legal floor area, and eliminates the owner-occupancy requirement to align with state law.
"Zoning Text Amendment four-twenty 26 is a town initiated amendment that applies townwide," Johnson said, describing the changes as intended "to satisfy those state requirements." After discussion about minor formatting and clarifying edits, Councilman Guttenberg moved to forward the amendment to council; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The commission also agreed by consensus to close the public hearing record before taking the recommendation vote.
