Prosecutor's office seeks separated victims room; board votes to solicit RFP

A representative of the prosecutor's office told the Alger County Board the office had submitted a letter asking the board to revise the planned build'out so that victims can be met in a separate, secure space. The representative said a separate victims'meeting room is important both for compliance with statutory victims'rights duties and for staff and victim safety.
"We submitted a letter to the board... as it relates to the build out of the front of the court office," the prosecutor's office representative said, explaining the office is asking for additional doors and partitions to create a private area for victims. The representative added, "The hardest day of my job is telling somebody I'm not gonna prosecute. That needs to be done in that room," underscoring the sensitivity of those encounters. After extended discussion about layout, security windows, HVAC and fire-suppression implications, the board agreed to request contractor bids so a firm cost and code assessment can be provided by an RFP and walkthrough.
