CRA and LeeTran outline plan for nine ADA-compliant bus shelters in Fort Myers redevelopment zones

The Community Redevelopment Agency and LeeTran updated the Environmental Advisory Board on a project to install nine new, ADA-compliant bus shelters in Fort Myers' CRA zones.
Melanie Long of the CRA said the shelters are part of a multi-year program funded through the CRA budget and state planning requirements. "We wanted better shelters," Long said, noting locations along MLK, Cleveland Avenue, Palm Beach Boulevard and Edison; she described goals of improving comfort and making stops more attractive to riders.
Dawn Huff, planning and scheduling manager for LeeTran, said the shelters use powder-coated aluminum, perforated panels (not clear acrylic) to reduce bird collisions, include a solar-powered advertising/notice box, and can be powder-coated in the CRA palette (the project team proposed a darker blue). She explained siting constraints (right-of-way and easements) that dictate exact placement and said larger shelters are possible where space and ridership justify them.
Board members raised bird-collision concerns and suggested designing the shelters as community amenities and placemaking features. LeeTran staff said maintenance, ADA landings and drainage are being addressed in design. The board thanked the presenters and had no further follow-up questions; the CRA indicated continued coordination with the board and LeeTran on location details.
