The Fort Myers City Council opened its Jan. 5 meeting with proclamations and recognitions. Mayor Kevin B. Anderson proclaimed the first week of January 2026 as Safe Haven Awareness Week and urged residents to learn about Florida’s safe-haven options for anonymous infant surrender, citing state statistics on infant abandonment since 2016.
The council also celebrated the Fort Myers Junior Firecats’ national championships; volunteers and coaches including Amber Patrick Ware and other leaders presented a short video and remarks. Chief McMillan presented Captain Raymond Rodriguez with the 2025 Distinguished Firefighter of the Year award after reading peer nominations and accomplishments.
