District special education steering committee recommends reinstating specialized instruction classroom at MJHS

The Special Education Steering Committee reported on system structures and recommended reinstating a specialized instruction classroom at Mokena Junior High and hiring an additional special education teacher for the junior high for 2025–26.
Mrs. Megan Mundt, director of student services, told the board the Special Education Steering Committee is working to clarify legal policies, defining stakeholder roles and establishing system structures. A review of current caseloads and service structures at Mokena Junior High highlighted the need to reinstate the specialized instruction classroom and hire an additional special education teacher for the junior high for 2025–26.
Mrs. Mundt also recognized paraprofessionals on National Paraprofessional Day and noted community activities tied to special education programming. She said the Young Athletes culminating event will take place at Mokena Elementary School on May 9 and that the Mokena Athletic Booster Club has offered to design and sell Special Olympics t-shirts to support the event.
