Work session: county reapplies for sewer and walking-trail grants; recycling policy and C&D charges discussed

During the June 23 work session, County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners the county has refiled two grant applications — one for sewer improvements and one for a rails-to-trails walking-trail project — and that the county has a reasonable chance at both. He said bids for Friendship Road will open in late July and that the commission can likely award the contract at its August meeting.
Staff also discussed the recycling center and charges for construction-and-demolition (C&D) debris. The manager said household garbage and small amounts of C&D are permitted without charge for residents with active water accounts, but larger teardown or remodel debris will be charged; local businesses will be charged a per-unit fee. Commissioners suggested reaching out to Goodwill or other nonprofits to collect donated clothing instead of leaving piles at the site. "If you have an active water account if you bring at no charge household garbage, you can bring small amounts of c&d, furniture, appliances, used motor oil, clothing, scrap metal, rims," Weaver said.
