Resident raises questions about driveway citations; county cites limited resources

At the Board of Commissioners' Oct. 1 regular meeting, J.D. Abercrombie spoke on behalf of resident Teresa Parrish about a warning she received after runoff and dirt from her driveway entered Massey Road. Abercrombie said the citation was issued Sept. 13 and that residents were given seven days to correct the issue; he asked why similar driveways did or did not receive warnings and how quickly the county follows up on work orders.
County Manager Thomas Weaver and Chairman Charles Coffey responded that the county issues warnings as part of a formal system and then schedules repairs as resources allow. Weaver said staff addresses immediate safety and passability first and returns later to complete work after storms; Coffey told the room that "a warning is a courtesy and we do not have to give them," noting the county exercises discretion in enforcement. Abercrombie told commissioners he filed a work order on Sept. 20 for Patterson Road and that some ditch and pipe cleaning occurred, but more complete repairs did not occur until later.
