Director Hilton Terry presented the downtown business weather and storm mitigation grant program, noting eligible measures such as flood panels, pumps, strapping/bracing, generators and exterior hardening and saying the CRA had awarded about $300,000 of a $1,000,000 program to date. Staff recommended awarding the maximum available grant amount to a Bayview Court property that houses Fancy’s restaurant and other downtown businesses.
Matthew Slaughter, partner/manager for Bayview Court LLC, described mitigation and restoration work since Hurricane Ian and subsequent storms and said the property has installed impact windows and doors and is finishing flood‑panel installations that are permitted and under review. He told commissioners the project has cost about “$158,000…everything spent to date.” Following presentation and questions, commissioners moved and approved the grant award.
Why it matters: The grant aims to protect downtown businesses from storm damage and to retain historically contributing properties; the grantee described concrete mitigation expenditures and ongoing compliance work required for flood panels and egress.
