Parks department assumes management of Fairview Cemetery; draft rules to be adopted by resolution

Chair told the board that the Parks Department has assumed direct management of Fairview Cemetery and introduced Marcos Barbosa as the part-time sexton hired about two months ago to help maintain the grounds. "The parks department is now, in charge of the actual cemetery," the Chair said, adding that Barbosa works about 20 hours a week.
Chair and staff said they met with cemetery personnel from nearby cities (Excelsior Springs, Richmond, Liberty) to compile reasonable rules; the draft rules are expected to be adopted by resolution rather than ordinance and posted on the city website. The board discussed that Fairview is city-owned, that some burial lots remain available, and that existing plantings will be grandfathered unless they interfere with maintenance.
