Committee earmarks $518 million-plus for education, including TISA increase

Education funding was a major focus in Chairman Hicks’s presentation of HB 2,631. He said the budget contains more than $518,000,000 in new state dollars for education initiatives.
Hicks singled out $145,500,000 in recurring funds for TISA growth intended to increase per-student funding and noted allocations for school construction and maintenance grants ($30,600,000), school safety grants ($10,000,000), Tennessee Achieves ($4,500,000) and a $7,000,000 nonrecurring allocation to pursue a National Cancer Institute designation at a university health center.
These education allocations were presented as part of the appropriations bill and were included when the subcommittee adopted three amendments and forwarded HB 2,631 to full finance.
