Commission approves memorial bench for Officer Matthew Bowen Memorial Park

The Parks and Recreation Commission approved a donated concrete bench and short plaque to memorialize Officer Matthew Bowen at the neighborhood park at Pitts School Road and Sunflower Way.
Lauren, the city's public works director, told the commission the donors requested anonymity and will pay for the bench outside of city funds; she said the plaque will read "in loving memory of officer Matthew Bowen." "in loving memory of officer Matthew Bowen, because that's all that it says," Lauren said, describing a concrete-formed bench that matches other recent park furnishings. The bench will be placed near an existing circular area and staff plan to plant a tree nearby for future shade.
Two public commenters expressed support. One resident said the proposal was "absolutely an honor" and suggested adding signage or surveillance in the park; a commissioner thanked the donor and praised the memorial as a way to remember the officer's name.
A commissioner moved to approve the bench donation; the motion was seconded and carried with affirmative votes from Commissioners Baltazar, Cabrera and Vice Chair Betts. According to the staff presentation, staff will receive the bench when delivered and coordinate installation in the park courtyard.
