City engineer: 2nd Street project behind schedule but on track to reopen for October car show

City engineer Nick Verret updated the council on the status of the 2nd Street and 2 Line Street pavement replacement project, describing unexpected unstable soils encountered in the first phase and the steps taken to correct them.
"We wound up, undercutting, in some areas about 3 feet, other areas about a foot, foot and 0.5, and, to get down to some more stable material," Verret said, describing removal and replacement with select fill and compaction as part of the change order work. He estimated the overall project runs roughly 210 days (about nine months) and acknowledged the project is somewhat behind schedule, but said the team hopes to reopen at least a portion of the northbound lane and finish the section before the city's car show the first weekend of October.
Verret also said staff has discussed temporary traffic-control options with the police chief, including off-duty officers for morning school traffic, and that they will continue to monitor concrete strength-test results to time lane reopenings.
