Cherokee County commissioners approve tourism grant, authorize SEK‑CAP support and remove several NRP projects

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners met June 9 in Columbus and approved a package of routine business including a small tourism grant, multiple project removals for noncompliance and a formal letter of support for local transportation services.
"Commissioner Jack Garner moved to approve a $500.00 tourism grant to Big Dreams for a Small Town to purchase a grill for the park they are building near Big Brutus," the minutes record; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Myra Carlisle Frazier and passed unanimously. The board later voted, again unanimously, to sign a letter of support for SEK‑CAP transportation services after Casey Brown of SEK‑CAP asked the board for support of routes that run five days per week to medical facilities.
The board also approved motions to remove six projects from the county's NRP list for noncompliance (project numbers N2024-09, 2023-47, 2023-41, 2023-38, 2022-62 and 2020-34). Commissioner Frazier moved for removal on the recorded motions; each motion passed without objection. The minutes show the removals were taken under the county's NRP rules as noncompliant.
Commissioners reviewed several 2026 departmental budgets — HR, Treasurer, Register of Deeds, Conservation District, Appraiser/GIS and Health Department — and held two short executive sessions on non-elected personnel (no action resulted). The meeting opened at 9:00 a.m. and adjourned at 11:50 a.m.
