Steuben County Legislature presents charter amendment; public hearing set for July 27

The Steuben County Legislature on June 22 presented Local Law Tentatively No. Eight for 2026, a proposed amendment to the county charter to reflect adoption of the Steuben County General Codes. The resolution (136-26) was introduced by W. Thew and the full charter text and numerous sections were read into the record.
The resolution sets a public hearing for July 27, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. in the Legislative Chambers and specifies the law will be subject to a permissive referendum if a petition protesting the law is filed within 45 days after final adoption. The Clerk of the Legislature was directed to post notice at county locations and publish once in the two official county newspapers at least five days before the hearing. The proposed changes include reorganized articles describing legislative structure, the county manager, an administrative code, and a codified “Steuben County General Codes.”
If adopted following the required notice and any permissive referendum process, the local law would formally integrate codification of the county’s local laws into the charter and administrative code structure. No vote on final adoption occurred at the June 22 meeting; the action on June 22 was presentation and scheduling of the public hearing.
