The Garden City Board of Education on July 27 approved the 2026–27 student code of conduct, including additional language addressing the prohibited use of wireless communication devices during instructional time in response to recent state legislation.
Dr. Shatka told the board, "As you know, governor Whitmer signed a house bill 4,141 and Senate bill 4 95 on 02/10/2026. Collectively, this amends the revised school code, specifically MCL 3 80 dot 13 oh 3 a to require district school district's board of education to adopt protocols prohibiting students from using wireless communication device during instructional time, effective the 20 26, 20 27 school year." The board accepted the recommended additions and approved the 2026–27 code of conduct by voice vote.
Board members were told the additions have been incorporated into building handbooks and that the policy changes reflect guidance from the policy committee and student services staff.
