Council briefed on $6.5 million Emigration Canyon road safety project; public open house set for June 30

HG Kunzler of Avenue Consultants told the City Council the Emigration Canyon Road Safety Improvement Project has $6.5 million in federal safety funding and covers a 1.8‑mile stretch currently in environmental review. Potential improvements under consideration include bicycle lanes, updated striping and signage, barrier replacement, drainage improvements and slope stabilization; the project will reach roughly 30% design as part of the environmental process.
Council Member Jennifer Hawkes and other council members emphasized early Council involvement and local knowledge. Kunzler encouraged residents to attend a June 30 public open house to view conceptual alternatives, to subscribe to the project website and newsletters, and to provide comments about springs, septic systems and other site conditions that could affect design. The project team reported recent work includes geotechnical investigations, drainage analysis, utility coordination and right‑of‑way research. Final decisions on proceeding to full design will follow completion of the environmental document.
