Ottawa County proclaims April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Tanya Paul, an outreach specialist with DVEC in the Concordia office, urged commissioners to designate April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and described local outreach and survivor services. "Now, therefore, we are asking the Ottawa County Commissioners to proclaim April 2026 as ****** assault awareness month," Paul said, citing DVEC/DVAC service statistics from 2025.
Commissioner (Speaker 3) moved to approve the proclamation and Speaker 4 seconded; the commission approved the measure by voice vote. Paul outlined awareness activities including a May 30 run/walk event, distribution of magnetic ribbons and educational outreach to local coffee shops. The proclamation text cited 132 survivors of domestic violence served across 19 counties in 2025 and specified April observances and prevention goals.
Commissioners asked staff to make the proclamation available for public posting and to provide copies to local partners. The commission did not attach new funding to the proclamation; follow-up will be administrative and focused on outreach and coordination with law enforcement and regional advocacy groups.
