Rachel said the public hearing was the final step to amend the city's contract with CalPERS so the city could implement negotiated pension cost-sharing. "Tonight's public hearing is the final step in the process to amend the city's contract with CalPERS so we can officially implement pension cost sharing with our employees," Rachel said.
Council opened the hearing, took no public comment and then voted to waive the second reading and adopt the ordinance. Staff told the council the required secret-ballot election of affected employees was held June 27–July 9 and a majority of employees voted in favor; the city clerk certified the results on July 10. The ordinance implements language tied to California Government Code requirements cited in the staff report.
