Horry County designates Fire Prevention Week, spotlights lithium‑ion battery hazards

Horry County leaders formally designated Oct. 5–11, 2025 as Fire Prevention Week and used the proclamation to draw attention to the growing fire risk posed by lithium‑ion batteries in everyday devices.
“Fire Prevention Week coming up in October 5th through 11th this year with a theme of…charge in the fire safety lithium ion batteries in your home,” Fire Chief Turner told the council while urging better battery disposal and community outreach. Council members agreed to the proclamation by voice vote. The chief said the county will work with residents and partners on battery-disposal solutions and public messaging.
The county also announced a Station 6 groundbreaking scheduled for Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. as part of broader public‑safety investments. The Fire Prevention Week designation will be used to promote Narcan training, prevention education and other station and school outreach already underway.
