The Portsmouth Historic District Commission approved routine minutes and a package of administrative approvals at its August meeting while postponing a handful of items to allow for additional information.
Vice Chair Margot Doring opened the meeting and led the commission through minutes and administrative business. The board voted to approve minutes from July meetings after a member flagged a possible error in the July 1 minutes’ recorded vote; Doring said staff would review the recording and correct the record if needed. The commission also agreed to postpone the application for 99 Marcy Street to September and accepted a withdrawal for 420 Pleasant Street.
Staff presented a batch of small-change administrative applications. The commission approved a 6‑foot cedar fence at 306 South Street; members asked only clarifying questions about ownership of an existing chain‑link fence. For 154 High Street Unit 6‑2, which seeks to rebuild an existing ramp to meet ADA slope requirements, the commission approved the work but stipulated that the front‑facing railings be wrought iron rather than the modern steel shown in the mock‑ups.
Commissioners said they were comfortable approving several other minor changes — including window and trim clarifications at 28 South Street and a handful of porch/rail adjustments at 172 South Street — while postponing the chimney repair item at 394 Pleasant Street until applicants provide more detail. Isaac Gilbo, who presented the administrative slate, summarized the board’s action at the close of the item and the commission moved to accept the approvals and postponements as discussed.
The commission also agreed to postpone two work sessions and asked the applicant for 129 State Street to repackage an application after earlier approvals lapsed and building conditions changed.
