Woodbury County approves $10 million liability insurance renewal at higher premium

The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve a $10,000,000 liability insurance renewal, following a presentation by Human Resources representative Melissa Thomas. Thomas told the board the recommended option maintains the county's current coverage level at a premium of $407,000 for the year, about $50,000 higher than last year.
"I do recommend, the $10,000,000 in coverage for the year," Melissa Thomas said during her presentation, noting the quote in the meeting backup that the options included one proposal that would have reduced coverage by $5,000,000 and another that would add a $125,000 supplement with the previous carrier. The board moved to approve the Obsidian special insurance policy (motion by Nelson; seconded by Dietrich) and carried the motion 5-0.
Thomas outlined the policy scope to include general liability, a $300,000 deductible, employee benefits liability, law enforcement liability, automobile liability and public official liability. Supervisors discussed cost increases briefly and approved the motion without amendment. The action was recorded as a formal motion and vote on the meeting agenda.
