South Range fire chief urges pay review, cites mutual aid and upcoming retirement

Fire Chief M. Balma told the Village of South Range Council on Feb. 6 that the department responded to two calls in the past month, is coordinating mutual aid with Houghton Fire and is planning a retirement dinner in April for a departing firefighter. "would like to increase fireman pay, and he will check with other departments in terms of their pay," Balma said during the public-comment portion of the meeting.
Balma also said he had been in touch with the fireworks vendor to determine this year’s cost and that staffing and pay comparisons would inform any recommendation to the council. The comment triggered no formal motion; council members did not take immediate action during the meeting but will consider budget and personnel items in upcoming deliberations.
