Aldermen approved the award of the 2026 citywide right-of-way maintenance contract to Geneva Construction after staff described it as the city's annual patching, pavement, crack-sealing and sidewalk-replacement program.
Alex Nugent of Public Works Engineering said the low bid came from Geneva Construction and that the company is a local firm subject to the city's local preference policy. "This is our yearly right away maintenance project," Nugent said. The staff presentation noted the work covers citywide patching, pavement repairs, crack sealing and in-kind sidewalk replacement.
Alderman Ted Maciakos questioned whether new striping near a newer fire station would be sufficient to keep parked cars clear. He asked, "is that gonna be enough to keep people from stopping in, in that zone in front of the fire station?" Nugent said striping is a first step, staff will monitor the site and pursue other options if striping does not resolve parking in the zone. Concerns were also raised about sidewalk accessibility on Spring Street where excavation and replacement have affected wheelchair access; staff said they would follow up and monitor the area.
The motion to award the contract was moved, seconded and passed on a voice vote recorded as 4-0.
