Organizers outline Newton’s July town celebration; fireworks tentative

Beth and Rick Jenkins updated the council on plans for Newton’s town celebration during the July 2 meeting.
They said plans include cornhole, pickleball, horseshoe and volleyball tournaments, an "America 250" challenge, a parade (which will include a bagpipe band that may require payment), and a Friday night dinner. Fireworks received tentative approval but could be reevaluated closer to the event date; the council will use a $250 donation from the Gran Fondo bike race toward fireworks costs. Jed Woodward and volunteers plan to host a fundraising breakfast to help pay for fireworks and the parade.
Organizers reported logistical choices for the celebration, including using propane grills rather than charcoal and paying for the parade bagpiper. Steven Jenkins noted he is working on fixing the pavilion water heater; Kathryn Rigby will purchase parade candy for council members to distribute.
