Vistra says plant will shift to IPAWS alerts; most sirens to be removed after transition

Jenny Stiefel, an off-site emergency preparedness specialist representing the Beaver Valley plant, briefed the board on a companywide change to its public alerting strategy. She said the plant will transition to an IPAWS-based alerting system designed to deliver Wireless Emergency Alerts directly to phones and that the updated plan is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2027. "The updated plan will go into effect on 01/01/2027," Stiefel said.
Stiefel said the plant currently owns 118 sirens within the 10‑mile radius; about 66 of those siren units are currently active and will remain active until the IPAWS project is implemented next year. She also said sirens are primarily for major emergencies and are owned by the plant; a small number of sirens will be offered to local fire departments for continued local use.
